Seed Preparation

Heavenly Blue seeds have a hard coat and benefit from a head start:
- Scarify: lightly nick the seed coat with a blade or rub with fine sandpaper, avoiding the embryo.
- Soak: soak in warm water for 24 hours before sowing. Discard any that remain floating after several hours.

Sowing

Timing: Sow after the last frost once soil has warmed, or start indoors 4–6 weeks earlier.
Depth: Sow about 1 cm deep.
Medium: Standard seed-raising mix, free-draining.
Temperature: Germinates best at 20–27°C.
Moisture: Keep evenly moist until germination, which usually takes 5–10 days with scarification.
Light: Full sun once seedlings emerge; morning glory is a sun-loving plant from the start.

Seedling Care

Transplant seedlings carefully — morning glories dislike root disturbance, so consider sowing directly into biodegradable pots to reduce transplant shock.
Provide support (string, trellis, or wire) early; this vine reaches for structure quickly and grows fast once established.
Space plants roughly 15–20 cm apart if growing several along a fence or trellis.

Mature Plant Care

Position: Full sun for best flowering; tolerates part shade but flowers less prolifically.
Support: Vigorous twining climber — give it a trellis, fence, or arbour with room to run; can reach 3 m or more in a season.
Water: Regular water during establishment and dry spells; established plants are reasonably drought-tolerant.
Feeding: Go easy on nitrogen-rich fertiliser — too much promotes leafy growth at the expense of flowers. A low-nitrogen, phosphorus-leaning feed suits it better.
Self-seeding: Flowers readily set seed pods; if you don't want volunteer seedlings next season, deadhead spent flowers before pods mature.
